Gaffer
Your machine writes the code. Your phone says yes.
- Windows, plus your phone
- Your own PC, reached over your Tailscale network
Launching soon. Join the waitlist and we’ll email you once, when it’s ready.
The problem
An agent that commits unsupervised is a liability, and an agent you have to sit in front of is just a slower editor. What’s missing is the bit in between: work happening on your machine while you’re somewhere else, stopping every time until you’ve read the diff and said yes.
What it does
Gaffer is a small program you run on your own Windows PC. It works through a queue of tasks against your repositories using Claude Code, and when it has changes it stops and waits. Open the page on your phone over Tailscale, read the changed files, and approve, reject or send it back with a correction. It never pushes to your main branch.
Made for: Developers who use Claude Code and want work to carry on while they are away from the desk.
How it works
Queue the work
Tick the projects you want and press Start, or type an instruction.
It works on your PC
Claude Code, on your own subscription, on your own machine.
It stops and waits
Nothing is written until you have seen the diff.
You approve from your phone
Approve, reject, or send it back with a correction.
Features
- Approval panel with the summary, changed files and diff
- Ask Gaffer: plain-English instructions to any repository, with Commit or Discard
- Manager: works through a numbered plan across several projects in turn
- App Previews: run what was actually pushed, two branches side by side
- Usage bars for each window of your Claude plan, with reset times
- Watch and steer the Claude Code sessions you started yourself
- Refuses to push to main, and halts after repeated failures instead of looping
- No dependencies to install, and no telemetry

Good to know
Stated plainly, so nobody signs up for the wrong thing.
- Windows only for now. The start-up and health checks are PowerShell.
- There is no login — Tailscale is the security model. Never expose it to the public internet.
- You need your own Claude Code subscription. Gaffer drives Claude Code; it does not replace it.
- The phone side is a web page today. An Android companion app is planned.
What you need
- Windows with PowerShell 5.1 or later
- Node.js 18 or newer
- Claude Code, signed in (subscription not included)
- Git
- Tailscale on the PC and the phone
Questions
Do I need an Anthropic API key?
No. Calls run through Claude Code on your subscription. When you reach your plan’s limit, Gaffer stops and shows the reset time instead of spending money.
Can it commit something without me seeing it?
Not from the Manager, the Approval panel or Ask Gaffer — proposed files wait for you to press Commit.
Does anything leave my machine?
Your own Claude Code calls, a once-a-day licence check that sends only your registration key to freehold-software.com, and read-only GitLab or GitHub calls if you turn on repo metrics. No telemetry.
